Numerical Modeling of the Machining Behavior of Natural Fiber Composites
Chapitre d'ouvrage scientifique
Résumé
This article presents a 2D micromechanical model developed to predict the machining behavior of natural fiber composites using the finite element (FE) method. Natural fibers are modeled using an elasto-plastic behavior and a ductile criterion for failure. The FE model has been performed for the orthogonal cutting of flax fiber reinforced polymer composites. Results shows a good predictiveness of the qualitative cutting behavior of flax fibers. However, correlation issues were noticed on the predictiveness of thrust forces. The FE has been then improved through a tribological approach based on the local micro-friction between the cutting toot and each composite component.
