Multiscale Tribo-Mechanical Behavior of Natural Fiber Composites
Chapitre d'ouvrage scientifique
Abstract
The use of natural fibers in composite industry requires a deep understanding of their complex mechanical behavior related to their multiscale cellulosic structure. This article aims to investigate the tribo-mechanical properties of flax fiber reinforced polypropylene composites using nanoindentation and scratch-test techniques in order to analyze each composite phase separately. Unlike the polymer matrix, the tribo-mechanical behavior of flax fibers shows a strong scale effect that is controlled by the chemical composition of the natural fiber. This specific comportment is also impacted by the temperature. The outcomes of this investigation should be considered for the design of these eco-friendly materials.
