Creating value from low-grade oak is a constant concern of forest policies. Finding markets for this abundant resource can improve the cost-effectiveness of the timber industry and silviculture. New opportunities in the structural area are currently the focus of interest, because of the strong points of wood for green building. In this area, low-grade oak has a strong technological potential, demonstrated through characterization studies. To realize this potential, the LaBoMap of the Arts et Métiers Cluny centre is working on the non-destructive mechanical grading of timber by machine, by combining different technologies and using different models. The article concludes that the inclusion of forestry data would improve the predictive value of models and better quantify the forest resource for the purposes of defining a business model.
