On appelle vieillissement tout phénomène lent et irréversible (dans les conditions d’utilisation) de la structure, la morphologie ou la composition du matériau, sous l’effet de son instabilité propre et/ou de son interaction avec l’environnement. Est considéré comme lent tout phénomène dont la cinétique, dans les conditions d’utilisation, ne peut être appréhendée dans une échelle de temps compatible avec les contraintes économiques. Il est alors nécessaire de recourir à des essais de vieillissement accéléré.
