Geometrical analysis of thread milling – Part 1: Evaluation of tool angles
TypeArticles dans des revues avec comité de lecture
Thread milling is a method which is increasingly used for machining thread. For this operation, a helical interpolation is required. Furthermore, the thread mill is a tool whose geometry is rather complex. Its envelope profile is linked to the thread profile and a single tooth of the thread mill is composed of three continuous cutting edges. The present study proposes a geometrical model and an analytical formulation to define the rake face and the cutting edge. Further, the calculations of cutting planes and cutting angles are explained. The analysis shows specific aspects of thread mills, in particular the fact that the flute angle may lead to a negative rake angle. This study is a contribution to cutting geometry aspect and constitutes a step for cutting force model in thread milling.

A generalised geometrical model of turning operations for cutting force modelling using edge discretisation CAMPOCASSO, Sébastien; COSTES, Jean-Philippe; FROMENTIN, Guillaume; BISSEY BRETON, Stéphanie; POULACHON, Gérard (Elsevier, 2015)The knowledge of cutting forces is of prime importance to ensure the success of cutting operations, the desired properties of the machined parts and therefore the functionality of the workpieces. Edge discretisation is one ...

FROMENTIN, Guillaume; POULACHON, Gérard (Springer, 2010)Thread milling offers interesting possibilities for machining internal or external threads. This machining technique uses a mill with a triangular profile for metric threads and a helical interpolation strategy. Thus, the ...
Flank wear prediction in milling AISI 4140 based on cutting forces PCA for different cutting edge preparations DENGUIR, Lamice; BESNARD, Aurélien; FROMENTIN, Guillaume; POULACHON, Gérard; ZHU, Xiaowen (Inderscience, 2016)One of the criteria mastering the choice of a cutting tool is its wear resistance. For coated inserts, prior to the coating process, edge preparation method choice will impact their performance. So, a classification based ...
