Abstract

The determination of all the 6 mechanical actions of cutting processes is very interesting for modeling of milling, turning and drilling in order to optimize the geometric parameters, kinematic, improve the quality of the obtained surface and the tool life. Analytical or semi-analytical models of cutting often give an order of the mechanical action magnitude in the cutting tool tip. The interest of these models is linked to the rapidity of the results obtaining and to the moderate cost compared with experimental approach In the literature there are several main analytical models (Merchant model – 1945, thermomechanical Oxley models -1980, Gilormini -1982 and Dargnat -2006). They are analyzed in this work, paying particular attention to their validity domains. Thus, the effects of variation of each parameter on the geometric and kinematic results obtained by each of the models are presented and compared, taking into account the specific modeling assumptions. This study will be conducted in orthogonal cutting configuration, because of its simplicity for modeling the cutting process, this configuration assumes that the cutting edge is perpendicular to the cutting speed and feed directions.
