Sensitivity Analysis of Cryogenic Cooling on Machining of Magnesium Alloy AZ31B-O
TypeCommunications avec actes
Improving the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys has gained special focus in recent years, and cryogenic machining has been one of the successfully used techniques. The current study presents a sensitivity analysis of cryogenic cooling effects on process mechanics, when cutting AZ31B-O magnesium alloy. Finite element modelling was used to simulate orthogonal cutting of AZ31B-O under dry and cryogenic conditions, where different parameters (cutting forces, temperatures, shear angle, chip compression ratio and plastic deformation) were investigated. Also, orthogonal cutting tests were performed on a CNC lathe, under dry and cryogenic conditions, where cryogenic cooling was applied to the clearance side using an LN2 jet.

Orthogonal cutting simulation of OFHC copper using a new constitutive model considering the state of stress and the microstructure effects DENGUIR, Lamice; OUTEIRO, José; FROMENTIN, Guillaume; VIGNAL, Vincent; BESNARD, Rémy (Elsevier, 2016)This work aims to develop an orthogonal cutting model for surface integrity prediction, which incorporates a new constitutive model of Oxygen Free High Conductivity (OFHC) copper. It accounts for the effects of the state ...
OUTEIRO, José; COSTES, Jean-Philippe; KORNMEIER, Joana (Elsevier, 2013)In machining, due to the tool vibration the forces, temperatures and stresses vary during the cutting process, so as the residual stresses over the machined surface. This variation of the residual stress has never been ...
ATTANASIO, Aldo; FAINI, Federico; OUTEIRO, José (Elsevier, 2017)The objective of this study is to simulate tool wear in drilling of nickel-based alloys, in particular Inconel 718. When machining these kind of materials, the impact of the thermal and mechanical phenomena generated by ...
